Title: An Academic Course That Teaches Heterosexual Students to be Allies to LGBT Communities: A Qualitative Analysis
Author Peter Ji, Steve N. Du Bois, Patrick Finnessy.
Impressum Journal of Gay and Lesbian Social Services, 21 (2009) 4 (oct), p. 402-429.
Summary A theory of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) ally identity development integrated the following theories - multicultural counseling theory (MCT), self-concept formation theory (SCFT), and social identity theory (SIT) - to design a course to train heterosexual students to be allies to LGBT communities. Students participated in interviews and activities with LGBT persons, presented seminars on LGBT topics, and wrote papers about these experiences. An analysis of their reactions suggested that initially, students perceived themselves as lacking credibility to be allies. After interacting with LGBT communities, students gained the knowledge, attitudes, and skills they needed to be confident in supporting and advocating for LGBT persons. Title: Assessing Campus Climates for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Students : Methodological and Political Issues
Author Robert D. Brown, Valerie J. Gortmaker.
Impressum Journal of LGBT Youth, 6 (2009) 4 (oct-dec), p. 416-435.
Summary Methodological and political issues arise during the designing, conducting, and reporting of campus-climate studies for LGBT students. These issues interact; making a decision about a methodological issue (e.g., sample size) has an impact on a political issue (e.g., how well the findings will be received). Ten key questions that must be addressed when planning an LGBT campus climate study are identified and different approaches investigators have taken when conducting studies are described. Additionally, the article provides tips for being sensitive to institutional needs and vulnerabilities, as well as being responsive to methodological and political issues. Title: Bisexual Pedagogy : Bringing Bisexuality into the Classroom
Author Jessica Nathanson.
Impressum Journal of Bisexuality, 9 (2009) 1 , p. 71-86.
Summary Following the emphasis over the last decade on coming out as a pedagogical tool, I use my personal experience in the classroom to problematize this approach. I articulate the specific experience of the bisexual teacher in the classroom, which is a different and undertheorized experience than that of heterosexual or gay and lesbian teachers. I offer "bisexual pedagogy" as a pedagogy that (1) encourages students and instructors to theorize their full, bodily presence in the academic classroom; (2) borrows Gloria Anzaldua's concept of the mestiza to complicate not just personal identity labels, but all categories of difference, thus incorporating the multicultural nature of bisexual identity into a multicultural, interdisciplinary approach to the classroom; and (3) takes as a given the importance of interdisciplinary thinking and pedagogical approach. In this sense, bisexual pedagogy is a pedagogy that is particularly sensitive to the realities of "blended identity categories" of race, sexuality, gender, religion, and so on, but one that is not exclusively the realm of out bisexuals. Title: Do My Teachers Care I'm Gay? : Israeli Lesbigay School Students' Experiences at their Schools
Author Oren Pizmony-Levy ... [et al.].
Impressum Journal of LGBT Youth, 5 (2008) 2 , p. 33-61.
Summary This empirical study explores the subjective experiences of Israeli lesbigay school students and their perceptions of the school climate. It provides descriptive data on different socio-demographic characteristics of Israeli lesbigay youth and presents the participants' experiences of school climate in the context of lesbigay issues. Further, it explores how students' characteristics, school environment, and school resources affect students' sense of belonging to school and sense of respect by peers. In order to delve into Israeli students' experiences, the authors conducted a School Climate Survey that was completed by some 300 participants - mostly on-line. Nearly half of the sample, which ranged in ages from 11 to 18, reported occasionally hearing homophobic remarks uttered by most of the teachers. One-third reported experiencing some form of harassment or violence by other students. [ Copies are available at http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/haworth-journals.asp ]

Title: Heterosexism and Homophobia on Fraternity Row : A Case Study of a College Fraternity Community
Author Grahaeme A. Hesp, Jeffrey S. Brooks.
Impressum Journal of LGBT Youth, 6 (2009) 4 (oct-dec), p. 395-415.
Summary The lead author questioned five fraternity members, one former member, and one non-member to assess their reasons for joining - or attempting to join - a fraternity chapter at a large public university in the Southeastern United States. Specifically, the study investigated (a) how their membership affected their sexual identity development and intimate relationships; (b) the degree of homophobia and heterosexism encountered; (c) how sexual orientation affected the quality of their fraternal experiences; and (d) the level of acceptance or rejection they faced. We examined how fraternity brothers with a gay sexual orientation affected chapter culture, the experiences, perceptions, and transitions of the gay members, and whether the beliefs and behaviors of heterosexual brothers were consistent or in conflict with the values espoused by the inter/national fraternities. We also present details concerning the reactions from fellow members, assess satisfaction with the fraternity experience, and detail the cultural norms of males and importance of gentlemanly behavior in fraternities. Title: Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Youth Talk about Experiencing and Coping with School Violence : A Qualitative Study
Author Arnold H. Grossman ... [et al.].
Impressum Journal of LGBT Youth, 6 (2009) 1 , p. 24-46.
Summary This qualitative study used five focus groups of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youth attending public high schools to examine their experiences with school violence. Core themes focused on lack of community and empowerment leading to youth being without a sense of human agency in school. Negative attention themes were indicative of the vulnerability that the youth felt at school. As principal means of coping, the LGBT youth escaped and avoided stressors by distancing themselves from school. From emergent themes of LGBT youth's experiences of school violence, recommendations to make schools safe and supportive learning environments for them are provided. These included the need for policies and rules, peer education, planned educational activities, and in-service training for school personnel about LGBT youth to create inclusive school communities. Title: State of the Field Review : Stories So Far: An Overview of the Research on Lesbian Teachers
Author Tania Ferfolja.
Impressum Sexualities, 12 (2009) 3 (june), p. 378-396.
Summary This article examines the academic literature that addresses the experiences of lesbian teachers working in western schooling systems. It illustrates that although all individuals have a right to work in a safe and secure context, lesbian teachers face an on-going trend of silencing, marginalization and discrimination in the workplace. Issues of harassment and the need to negotiate one's sexuality continue to prevail. Although lesbian and gay research has been a burgeoning field of enquiry over the last two decades, no comprehensive review has been published that specifically targets the professional lives of lesbian teachers. This is despite the potential use of such knowledge in the development of educational, recruitment, and social policy and/or anti-discrimination legislation. This compilation seeks to address this lacuna and to simultaneously raise both researcher and practitioner awareness of the ongoing limitations, obstacles and injustices faced by lesbian teachers in the workplace. It also importantly illustrates the theoretical developments in understanding such experience while highlighting that these women are not simply oppressed victims but possess power and agency.
