	Summary	A guide to 62 gay male U.S. poets and playwrights. The poets and playwrights include well-known writers, such as Edward Albee, Allen Ginsberg, and James Merrill, but most are lesser known, especially in the broader world of literary studies. Some are no longer living (e.g., James Broughton, 1913-1999), but all are twentieth-century figures, many continuing into the twenty-first century. The contributors are mostly academics, but several are literary writers in their own right. The articles, arranged in alphabetical order, vary in length from 4 to 16 pages. They have a uniform format: biography, major works and themes, critical reception, and bibliography (first works of the poet or playwright by genre, followed by works about him). Citations are standard, except that monograph citations don't include pagination. The volume concludes with a general bibliography, an index, and a list of contributors with brief biographical information. The index is limited almost entirely to names of persons and titles of works, with very few subject entries (among them, AIDS, HIV, and Sadomasochism). Copyright © American Library Association. 	Summary	This essay discusses the book "Byron and Women (and Men)" edited by Peter Cochran. Lord Byron was the reigning male sex symbol of the early 19th century. His bisexuality was known not only in his own circle of friends, but "on the street" as well. Byron's very survival depended on discretion and that his writing was expurgated during his lifetime while his letters and memoirs were burned. Many people expected that he would flaunt his female conquest while concealing his male relationships, but were wrong.

	Summary	In Thiefing Sugar Omise'eke Natasha Tinsley explores the poetry and prose of Caribbean women writers, revealing in their imagery a rich tradition of erotic relations between women. She takes the book's title from Dionne Brand's novel In Another Place, Not Here, where eroticism between women is likened to the sweet and subversive act of cane cutters stealing sugar. The natural world is repeatedly reclaimed and reinterpreted to express love between women in the poetry and prose Tinsley analyzes. She not only recuperates stories of Caribbean women-loving women, which have been ignored or passed over by postcolonial and queer scholarship until now; she also shows how those erotic relations and their literary evocations form a poetics and politics of decolonization. Her interpretations of twentieth-century literature by women from the Dutch-, English-, and French- speaking Caribbean take into account colonialism, migration, labour history, violence, and revolutionary politics. Throughout Thiefing Sugar, Tinsley connects her readings to contemporary matters such as neo-imperialism and international GLBT and human-rights discourses. She explains too how the texts she examines intervene in black feminist, queer, and postcolonial studies, not least by highlighting the cultural limitations of the metaphors that dominate queer theory in North America and Europe, including those of the closet and "coming out."
