While the mainstream still argues about homosexuality, many transgender and gender-variant people sit in congregations, serve their communities, marry under the chuppah, and otherwise go about the business of creating religious and secular Jewish families. Balancing on the Mechitza gives voice to this moment in Jewish culture. The contributors-activists, theologians, scholars, and others, both transgender and non-transgender allies-share for the first time in a printed volume their interpretations of classical Jewish texts about ambiguous bodies, as well as their sacred and secular stories of Jewish prayer, ritual, and social life. Essays included in Balancing on the Mechitza share the stories of a transwoman who lives an Orthodox Jewish life; a transman who serves as legal witness for a man (a role not typically open to persons designated female at birth) during a conversion ritual; and a gender-queer person who explores how to adapt the masculine and feminine pronouns in Hebrew to reflect a non-binary gender identity. Out of the successes of the feminist movement and the growth of the lesbian and gay rights movement, the "T" is emerging as a distinct Jewish population sounding a chorus of wise, critical, and inspiring voices. |

This report investigates how key U.S. Christian conservatives of various backgrounds - Roman Catholics and Mormons, as well as right-leaning evangelicals - are expanding the U.S. Christian Right infrastructure on the African continent with new institutions and campaigns that are reshaping national political dynamics and even laws based on an American template. Within the past five years, the Roman Catholic Human Life International (HLI), the Pat Robertson-founded American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ-USA), and Family Watch International (FWI), led by a Mormon, have launched or expanded their work in Africa dedicated to promoting their Christian Right worldview. A loose network of rightwing charismatic Christians called the Transformation movement joins them in fanning the flames of the culture wars over homosexuality and abortion by backing prominent African campaigners and political leaders. |

Start with an anthology - itll give you a broad survey of whats out there, and turn you on to authors whose work youll want to read more deeply. "Nice Jewish Girls," a lesbian anthology edited by Evelyn Torton Beck, was the first of its kind, published in 1982. "Twice Blessed," edited by Christie Balka and Andy Rose, came out a decade later, and includes dozens of personal and topical essays on everything from community to spirituality. "Queer Jews," edited by David Shneer and Caryn Aviv, came out several years after "Twice Blessed," and shows the continued evolution of thinking around GLBT issues for Jews. These three together provide a great historical background, as well as an introduction to some of the most important thinkers on these subjects. |

Raphaël Creemers heeft een niet alledaags levensverhaal. Emotioneel verwaarloosd door zijn familie, seksueel misbruikt door zijn pleegvader, kwam hij terecht in een tehuis van een Volle Evangelie Gemeente, een warme en veilige omgeving. Raphaël omarmde het geloof en concludeerde dat hij zijn homoseksuele gevoelens moest onderdrukken. Hij trouwde en kreeg vier kinderen. Hij richtte zelfs een stichting op om homomannen van hun homoseksualiteit te genezen. Maar na een aantal jaren moest hij erkennen dat dat leven niet vol te houden was. |

This essay explores the conceptual and contextual shifts in queer theoretical work as it is entering into its third decade of articulation. The essay reviews important recent themes in, and examines implications of, queer theoretical scholarship for the study of religion and gender. I suggest that among the implications are a (more) undisciplined study of religion (and secularism) that takes seriously shifts resulting from transnational and diasporic queer scholarship, shifts in conceptions of agency and resistance resulting from analyses and critique of homonormative positions, and can critically intervene in homonationalism and Islamophobia. |

The cultural processes of heteronormativity and compulsory heterosexuality are acutely active within Islamic societies. The present study explored perceptions of coming out among a group of British Muslim gay men (BMGM), focussing upon the potential consequences for identity processes and psychological well-being. Ten BMGM of Pakistani descent were interviewed using a semi-structured interview schedule. Interview transcripts were subjected to interpretative phenomenological analysis and informed by identity process theory. Four superordinate themes are reported, including (1) social representational constraints upon coming out; (2) coming out: a source of shame and a threat to distinctiveness; (3) fear of physical violence from ingroup members; and (4) foreseeing the future: coming out as a coping strategy. Data suggest that BMGM face a bi-dimensional homophobia from ethno-religious ingroup members and the general population, which can render the prospect of coming out threatening for identity. In de afgelopen drie jaar heeft de auteur bij homoseksuele asielzoekers afkomstig uit een islamitische samenleving een groot aantal interviews en psychologische onderzoeken afgenomen in opdracht van de Stichting Secret Garden te Amsterdam. Daarnaast is psychologische onderzoek verricht op verzoek van advocaten, die in het vreemdelingenrecht zijn gespecialiseerd. In dit onderzoeksverslag zijn de resultaten van een vijftigtal onderzoeken verwerkt. Het betreft mannen en vrouwen met een homoseksuele geaardheid, die in een islamitische samenleving zijn geboren en opgegroeid. Ter onderbouwing en aanvulling van de conclusies is de literatuur doorgenomen, die betrekking heeft op de wijze waarop de Islamitische samenleving mensen met een homoseksuele geaardheid ervaart en veroordeelt. Voorts zijn interviews afgenomen bij verschillende personen die een academische studie Arabische Taal en Cultuur hebben gevolgd. Daarbij is er bewust voor gekozen om tevens een interview af te nemen bij een homoseksuele academicus, die zelf afkomstig is uit een islamitische samenleving en dus naast een gedegen theoretische kennis tevens over de nodige ervaringskennis beschikt. Tenslotte vormde de Stichting Secret Garden een belangrijke bron van informatie. |

Daarnaast biedt het evenement ruimte voor ontmoeting tussen LGBT's met een islamitische achtergrond, van binnen Amsterdam en buiten Amsterdam.
