Titel: Coping Styles as Mediator of Sexual Orientation-Related Health Differences
Auteur Theo G. M. Sandfort ... [et al.].
Impressum Archives of Sexual Behavior, 38 (2009) 2 , p. 253-263.
Samenvatting The higher prevalence of health problems in homosexual compared to heterosexual populations is usually understood as a consequence of minority stress. We hypothesized that differential rates of health problems also could result from sexual orientation-related differences in coping styles. We explored this using data collected in a general population-based study (N = 9684) via face-to-face interviews. A higher prevalence of both mental and physical health problems, as assessed with individual questions, the GHQ-12, and checklists, was observed in homosexual compared to heterosexual men and women. Coping style was related to sexual orientation in men, but not in women. Compared to heterosexual men, homosexual men more strongly applied emotion-oriented and avoidance coping strategies. Emotion-oriented coping mediated the differences in mental and physical health between heterosexual and homosexual men. Findings suggest the importance of further exploration of the development and use of emotion-oriented and avoidance coping by homosexual men.

Titel: Das Geschlecht des ersten Menschen : Zur mythologischen Herkunft der Ausdrücke Androgynie und Hermaphrodit
Auteur Michael Groneberg.

Titel: Ecological Models of Sexual Satisfaction among Lesbian/Bisexual and Heterosexual Women
Auteur Alison W. Henderson, Keren Lehavot, Jane M. Simoni.
Impressum Archives of Sexual Behavior, 38 (2009) 1 (feb), p. 50-65.
Samenvatting Sexual satisfaction is an integral component of sexual health and well-being, yet we know little about which factors contribute to it among lesbian/bisexual women. To examine a proposed ecological model of sexual satisfaction, we conducted an internet survey of married heterosexual women and lesbian/bisexual women in committed same-sex relationships. Structural equation modeling included five final latent variables for heterosexual women and seven final latent variables for lesbian/bisexual women. Overall, results indicated that, for both groups of women, a similar constellation of factors (depressive symptoms, relationship satisfaction, sexual functioning, and social support) was related to sexual satisfaction. In lesbian/bisexual women, internalized homophobia was an additional factor. Contrary to expectations, the presence of children in the home and a history of childhood sexual abuse did not contribute significantly to the model for either group. Findings support the idea that gender socialization may influence sexual satisfaction more than socialization around sexual orientation. Additionally, given that for both groups of women relationship satisfaction explained a substantial amount of variance in sexual satisfaction, sexual concerns may be better addressed at the relationship than the individual level.

Titel: 'Falling in love with someone from your own sex is like going against Cyprus itself' : Discourses towards heterosexual and female-to-female subjectivities at the University of Cyprus
Auteur Andreas Onoufriou.
Impressum Journal of Gender Studies, 18 (2009) 1 (march), p. 13-23.
Samenvatting This article explores the views of Cypriot University students on heterosexuality and homosexuality. Drawing on interviews with eight students (four male and four female) and on discussions with two focus groups consisting of 10 female students, it will be argued that many young women in Cyprus invest 'in a heterosexual career' through marriage. Young women who do not follow this pattern, characterised by one participant as the 'national sport of Cypriots', seem to be ostracised by a cultural setting which privileges heterosexuality and national purity. Those who might feel a strong same-sex attraction are compelled to look beyond their homeland for happiness. The participants interviewed expressed the idea that in the cultural milieu of Cyprus there is hardly space for alterity and subject reformation; where different stories can challenge the phallogocentric national and heterosexual order of contemporary Cyprus.

Titel: Feminism's Queer Theory
Auteur Annamarie Jagose.
Impressum Feminism and Psychology, 19 (2009) 2 , p. 157-174.
Samenvatting This article argues that, in contradistinction to its widely promoted ethical openness to its future, queer theory has been less scrupulous about its messy, flexible and multiple relations to its pasts, the critical and activist traditions from which it emerged and that continue to develop alongside in mutually informing ways. In particular, it assesses queer theory's tangled, productive and ongoing relations with feminist theory. Returning to the controversial analytic separation of gender and sexuality that has been prominently theorized as key to distinguishing between feminist and queer theoretical projects, the article traces the influence of Gayle Rubin's `Thinking Sex: Notes for a Radical Theory of the Politics of Sexuality' through feminist and queer scholarship in order to demonstrate that, however different their projects, feminist theory and queer theory together have a stake in both desiring and articulating the complexities of the traffic between gender and sexuality.

Titel: Gay Stereotypes : The Use of Sexual Orientation as a Cue for Gender-Related Attributes
Auteur Aaron J. Blashill, Kimberly K. Powlishta.
Impressum Sex Roles, 61 (2009) 11/12 (Dec), p. 783-793.
Samenvatting This study investigated whether gay men and lesbians are assumed to have attributes stereotypically associated with the other gender. Participants were 110 male and female undergraduates from a private, Midwestern, U.S. university. Participants were randomly assigned to one of four conditions (i.e., gay male, lesbian, heterosexual female, heterosexual male) and rated their given target on possession of traditionally masculine and feminine occupational interests, activities, and traits. Results revealed that, despite some changes in the status of gay men and lesbians in society, stereotypes regarding sexual orientation were similar to those seen in studies conducted 20 years ago. Specifically, gay males were viewed as less masculine/more feminine than heterosexual males, and lesbians were viewed as more masculine/less feminine than heterosexual females.

Titel: Gendered Sexuality : A New Model and Measure of Attraction and Intimacy
Auteur Tyrel J. Starks ... [et al.].
Impressum Journal of Homosexuality, 56 (2009) 1 (jan), p. 14-30.
Samenvatting Currently, the literature related to sexual orientation is ambiguous with regard to the relationship of sexual orientation, sexual identity, attraction, and intimacy. In order to explore the relationships of self-identified categorical sexual identity (which is the most popular method of sexual orientation assessment) with attraction and intimacy, it is imperative that researchers have access to a reliable and valid measure of the latter. The present study proposes a model for conceptualizing attraction and intimacy, termed gendered sexuality, and examines the factor structure of a measure designed to assess the construct. Results suggest that four factors adequately accounted for the variance in gendered sexuality in a large sample of young adults. These factors assess attraction to females, attraction to males, intimacy with females, and intimacy with males. Exploratory analyses provided preliminary evidence of potential construct validity and suggested that discrepancies between desired and available behavior predict dissatisfaction in interpersonal role as measured by the Outcome Questionnaire 45.2. Samenvatting Background: Male sex workers (MSWs) have recently been recognized as an important risk group for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) including human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Although there are global studies on MSWs, few such studies describe the behavioral patterns and STIs among this population in India. Methods: MSWs were evaluated at the Humsafar trust, a community based organization situated in suburban Mumbai, India. We report on the demographics, sexual behaviors, and STIs including HIV of these sex workers. Results: Of the 75 MSWs, 24 were men and 51 were transgenders. The mean age of the group was 23.3 (+ 4.9) years. About 15% were married or lived with a permanent partner. Of these individuals, 85% reported sex work as a main source of income and 15% as an additional source. All the individuals reported anal sex (87% anal receptive sex and 13% anal insertive sex). About 13% of MSWs had never used a condom. The HIV prevalence was 33% (17% in men vs 41% in transgenders, P = 0.04). The STI prevalence was 60% (58% in men vs 61% in transgenders, P = 0.8). Syphilis was the most common STI (28%) in these MSWs. HIV was associated with being a transgender (41 vs 17%, P = 0.04), age > 26 years (57 vs 28%, P = 0.04), more than one year of sex work (38 vs 8%, P = 0.05), and income < Rs. 2000 per month (62 vs 27%, P = 0.02). Conclusions: The MSWs have high-risk behaviors, low consistent condom use, and high STI/HIV infections. These groups should be the focus of intensive public health interventions aimed at reduction of risky sexual practices, and STI/HIV prevention and care.

Titel: Researching the irrelevant and the invisible : Sexual diversity in the judiciary
Auteur Leslie J. Moran.
Impressum Feminist Theory, 10 (2009) 3 , p. 281-294.
Samenvatting Early in the course of undertaking empirical research on the sexual diversity of the judiciary I had to address a particular challenge. Sexuality, I was repeatedly told, is not and ought not to be a difference that is taken into account. At best it ought to be disregarded or taken out of consideration. This generated a number of challenges for my research. How do you research and make sense of sexuality as a difference that key informants assert is absent or seek to make invisible and irrelevant? How do you research the operation and effects of that which is not to be spoken about? How do you research the sexual norm when its existence and operation is denied? This article explores one response. It is a project that may for some be surprising and unexpected. It is a study of judicial portraits. Drawing on the insights of queer theory and art historical scholarship on portraits I undertake a textual analysis of these images, focusing upon the aesthetic and artistic traditions used to make them. A small case study of portraits of the Chief Justices of the Supreme Court of New South Wales is used to explore how, if at all, sexuality figured in these portraits.

Titel: Sexual Dysfunction, Paraphilias and their Relationship to Childhood Abuse in Men who have Sex with Men
Auteur Stacey L. Seibel ... [et al.].
Impressum International Journal of Sexual Health, 21 (2009) 2 (april-june), p. 79-86.
Samenvatting This study aimed to examine 1) the occurrence of sexual dysfunctions and paraphilias and 2) the relationship between childhood abuse and current sexual disorders in a MSM sample. Participants were MSM in the Midwest who completed baseline surveys prior to attending a sexual health seminar. Most men reported a sexual dysfunction or paraphilia. Thirty-nine percent of the sample reported childhood abuse. Results indicated childhood abuse was associated with a significant increased risk of male erectile disorder (OR = 1.83) and secondary sexual dysfunction (OR = 2.01). The intent of the study was to generate hypotheses to guide future research efforts. [ Copies are available at http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/haworth-journals.asp ]

Titel: Sex work in Mexico : vulnerability of male, travesti, transgender and transsexual sex workers
Auteur Cesar Infante, Sandra G. Sosa-Rubi, Silvia Magali Cuadra.
Impressum Culture, Health and Sexuality, 11 (2009) 2 (feb), p. 125-137.
Samenvatting In Mexico, male sex workers (MSW) and travesti, transgender and transsexual (TTT) sex workers are among the groups most affected by HIV. They suffer from stigma and discrimination, yet are often absent from the design of programmes and HIV prevention campaigns. The objective of this study was to provide an account of the social context in which MSW and TTT sex workers live, by focusing on their sexual identities, sexual practices and vulnerability to HIV. Data collection took place in Mexico City and involved observational work together with 36 in-depth interviews. Findings reveal a differentiation of vulnerability by sub-group. In general, vulnerability is influenced by the social context, stigma related to homosexuality and sex work, as well as sex workers' access to scarce social capital and the lack of response in terms of social and health programmes. In order to diminish the vulnerability of MSW and TTT sex workers and reduce their risk of HIV infection, preventive measures are needed which take into account their specific health and social needs, promote meaningful participation and the encourage respect for human rights.

Titel: Social context, sexual risk perceptions and stigma : HIV vulnerability among male sex workers in Mombasa, Kenya
Auteur Jerry Okal ... [et al.].
Impressum Culture, Health and Sexuality, 11 (2009) 8 (nov), p. 811-826.
Samenvatting Knowledge about sexual practices and life experiences of men having sex with men in Kenya, and indeed in East Africa, is limited. Although the impact of male same-sex HIV transmission in Africa is increasingly acknowledged, HIV prevention initiatives remain focused largely on heterosexual and mother-to-child transmission. Using data from ten in-depth interviews and three focus group discussions (36 men), this analysis explores social and behavioural determinants of sexual risks among men who sell sex to men in Mombasa, Kenya. Analysis showed a range and variation of men by age and social class. First male same-sex experiences occurred for diverse reasons, including love and pleasure, as part of sexual exploration, economic exchange and coercion. Condom use is erratic and subject to common constraints, including notions of sexual interference and motivations of clients. Low knowledge compounds sexual risk taking, with a widespread belief that the risk of HIV transmission through anal sex is lower than vaginal sex. Traditional family values, stereotypes of abnormality, gender norms and cultural and religious influences underlie intense stigma and discrimination. This information is guiding development of peer education programmes and sensitisation of health providers, addressing unmet HIV prevention needs. Such changes are required throughout Eastern Africa.

Titel: The Tightrope of Normalcy : Homosexuality, Developmental Citizenship, and American Adolescence
Auteur Don Romesburg.
Impressum Journal of Historical Sociology, 21 (2008) 4 , p. 417-442.
Samenvatting In the early twentieth century, American developmental citizenship presumed a gradual extension of rights based upon a naturalized trajectory that would lead individuals toward heterosexuality, gender complimentarity, and increasing social and political investment. Means changed dramatically through which psychological, pedagogical, and political discourses positioned adolescence, sexuality, and gender in relationship to national belonging. Yet compliance with gender and sexual normativity as a marker of successful adjustment into adulthood persisted as a powerful precondition to full citizenship. Figurative "problem youth" were attacked in part because they threatened to expose exclusionary assumptions undergirding supposedly universal ideals in optimistic modern American democracy.

Titel: "Wouldn’t a Boy Do?" : Placing Early-Twentieth-Century Male Youth Sex Work into Histories of Sexuality
Auteur Don Romesburg.
Impressum Journal of the History of Sexuality, 18 (2009) 3 (sep), p. 367-392.
Samenvatting From the 1880s through the 1910s urban U.S. reformers and police only infrequently sought out male youth sex work, but they still found it. They happened upon it while attempting to intervene into immigrant families, prevent juvenile delinquency, temper child labor, or suppress female prostitution. From the 1910s through the 1930s in Chicago social investigators, psychologists, and sociologists found male youth sex work when they examined the 'individual delinquent,' the social world of hobos, the lives of boys in street trades or gangs, and the deviancies of homosexuals, whom they largely conceived of as adult men. The 'discoveries' of male youth sex work that occurred while such experts looked for something else provoked a mixture of alarm and indifference. As a result, authorities, while compelled to make sometimes extensive comments on male youth sex work in field, court, or clinic notes, made scant, vague reference to it in their published reports. Consequently, reform and policing activities regarding male youth sex work were much more inconsistent than were actions regarding female prostitution, commercialized amusements, and more anticipated forms of boy delinquency such as theft and truancy. It was as if experts could only understand male youth sex work out of the corners of their eyes, on the margins of the supposedly more pressing issues they conceived of as their main concerns.
