Samenvatting |
An exploration of the challenges facing lesbians with chronic conditions and their coping strategies was investigated by examining the experiences of participants who were clients of a volunteer organization serving chronically ill lesbians. This article reports the results associated with those challenges, with its ultimate goal being and to assess the effectiveness of current services. Using the participant observation method, as employed by O'Toole (2000), the analysis was based on multiple data sources and 10 years experience within the volunteer organization, including 3 years in direct client support. A qualitative method served as the primary focus for the study. The quantitative method preceded the qualitative method and provided limited supporting data. The total number of participants included all past and current clients, but the number participating in each data source varied. Qualitative sources included archival structured interviews (n = 69), taped interviews (n = 5-6), and extensive comments written in response to the quantitative surveys (n = 14). The quantitative measures (n = 14) included the researcher-developed Chronic Conditions Challenges Checklist (C4) and the Short Form of the McGill Pain Questionnaire ([SF-MPQ]; Melzack, 1998). A content analysis of all data sources found a number of challenges that met the criteria of being identified in at least two data sources and across multiple participants. Challenges included those related to the disease process (i.e., pain, fatigue, and decreases in mobility) to impacts of the condition (financial security, ability to participate, support from family of origin and independence, loneliness, and issues related to mental health). Challenges were discussed in terms of those that are similar to and different from other women suffering from chronic illness, as well as their relevance to related literature. Samenvatting |
This Internet-based study was designed to compare health risk behaviors of gay and non-gay university students from stratified random cross-sectional samples of undergraduate students. Mean age of the 4,167 male participants was 20.5 (±2.7) years. Of these, 206 (4.9%) self-identified as gay and 3,961 (95.1%) self-identified as heterosexual. After adjusting for selected characteristics and clustering within university, gay men had higher odds of reporting: multiple sexual partners; cigarette smoking; methamphetamine use; gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB) use; other illicit drug use within the past 30 days and during lifetime; and intimate partner violence (IPV). Understanding the health risk behaviors of gay and heterosexual men is crucial to identifying associated factors and intervening upon them using appropriate and tailored strategies to reduce behavioral risk disparities and improve health outcomes. Samenvatting |
Research related to eating and body image disturbance in males has focused almost exclusively on Caucasian men. This preliminary study examined the prevalence of disturbed eating and body image symptomatology in a highly understudied and difficult to assess population - African-American men (n = 18) who have sex with men. Nineteen percent of the sample scored above clinical cut offs for possible eating disorders with 25% of the sample endorsing occasional or more frequent vomiting after meals. Use of appearance-changing supplements and substances were frequently reported. Although most body image measures were similar to norms, self-ideal discrepancy for muscularity was almost three times greater than male weightlifters. The implications of problematic body image and eating behaviors and the link between body image and high-risk sexual behaviors are discussed. Samenvatting |
Does the prevalence and degree of body dissatisfaction differ among heterosexual and homosexual men and women? Some theorists have suggested that, compared to their heterosexual peers, gay men are at greater risk for body dissatisfaction and lesbians at lower risk. Past studies examining this issue have generally relied on small samples recruited from gay or lesbian groups. Further, these studies have sometimes produced conflicting results, particularly for comparisons of lesbian and heterosexual women. In the present research, we compared body satisfaction and comfort with ones body during sexual activity among lesbian women, gay men, heterosexual women, and heterosexual men through two large online studies (Ns = 2,512 and 54,865). Compared to all other groups, heterosexual men reported more positive evaluations of their appearance, less preoccupation with their weight, more positive effects of their body image on their quality of life and the quality of their sex life, more comfort wearing a swimsuit in public, and greater willingness to reveal aspects of their body to their partner during sexual activity. Few significant differences were found among gay men, lesbian women, and heterosexual women. Many gay men (42%) reported that their feelings about their body had negative effects on the quality of their sex life, as did some lesbian women (27%), heterosexual women (30%), and heterosexual men (22%). Overall, the findings supported the hypothesis that gay men are at greater risk than heterosexual men for experiencing body dissatisfaction. There was little evidence that lesbian women experience greater body satisfaction than heterosexual women. |

This article outlines the role of school counselors at the elementary, middle, and high school levels as they work with transgender youth. The authors take a developmental approach to identify the role and opportunities school counselors have in building a transgender-positive environment in school settings. Important language and terms for working with transgender youth are provided as well as practice recommendations across elementary, middle, and high school counseling levels. In addition, the authors recommend specific advocacy-focused approaches to make school counseling interventions more transgender-positive. Samenvatting |
This study explored the relationship between dimensions of functioning in the family of origin of graduate students in helping profession programs and their attitudes toward lesbians and gay men. One hundred forty-three participants completed the Family Environment Scale (FES-R: Moos & Moos, 1986), the Attitudes Toward Lesbians and Gay Men scale (ATLG: Herek, 1994), and demographic questions. Results suggest that three family dimensions (conflict, intellectual-cultural orientation, and moral-religious emphasis) significantly predicted attitudes toward lesbians and gay men. The results also revealed that younger students held more negative attitudes toward lesbians and gay men than their older peers. Implications for educators, researchers, and practitioners are discussed. [ Copies are available at http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/haworth-journals.asp ] |

Samenvatting |
Although specialized formal services are becoming more prevalent in addressing the needs of the older LGBT community, little is known about informal groups that have organized to meet the needs of this population. This article presents two case examples that depict the efforts of older lesbians to meet the social and care needs of members of their communities. The concept of psychological contracting is used to analyze these experiences, and combined with a review of the literature, practice implications for care and support for this special population are discussed. Samenvatting |
Very little has been written about lesbians, gay men, and bisexual people (LGBs) with severe mental illness (SMI). In general, LGBs with SMI have the same mental health needs as their heterosexual counterparts. However, there is a need for some basic understanding and confronting potential bias among health practitioners. Although specialized services for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people with severe mental illness exist in some large metropolitan centers, efforts need to be made to expand access to services that are safe and welcoming to LGBT people, whether those services are specialized or not. Practitioners can help their LGB patients with severe mental illness by taking a thorough sexual history, being aware of gay-affirmative mental health services in their area, and advocating for services where none exist. Comprehensive, developmental school counseling is associated with positive outcomes. Despite this, research has indicated that lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) students may still remain invisible and underserved in schools. The authors propose LGBTQ Responsive School Counseling for school counselors to address this potential gap. Examples of LGBTQ responsive school counseling curriculum, student planning, counseling, and systems support activities are provided. Implications for training, practice, and research are also discussed. [ Copies are available at http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/haworth-journals.asp ] |

Samenvatting |
Modern homonegativity is prejudice against gay men and lesbians based on current issues such as equality and social justice. Predictors of modern homonegativity among professional counselors were examined. Logistic regression analysis indicated that frequency of church attendance, not having a gay or lesbian friend, being a member of the Republican political party, not having participated in training about gay and lesbian sexual identities in the 12 months prior to the study, and being older predicted the probability of counselors having high modern homonegativity scores. Samenvatting |
The intersection of ethnocultural and sexual orientation identities presents unique challenges that mandate cultural competence in assessing and intervening with ethnically diverse lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people. Effective counseling with this population requires an understanding of non-Eurocentric, nonheterosexual worldviews as well as an awareness of the sociopolitical realities of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender life. Culture-centered counseling theory provides an effective framework for addressing the needs of ethnically diverse lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender clients. A review of the literature on counseling ethnically diverse lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people is provided along with case illustrations to illuminate the use of culture-centered counseling theory with this population. Recommendations focus on counselor training to increase ethnocultural knowledge and clinical competence and to reduce personal bias. Samenvatting |
The author explains just how critical the work of psychiatrists and other mental health professionals, both clinicians and scientists, can be in terms of performing research, publishing, consulting to civil rights attorneys, and communicating with each other, within and on behalf of the profession. This work is also critical in communicating with people to inform the public about the lives of homosexuals, their commonalities with nonhomosexuals, their emotional needs, rights, and the impact of having those rights and equalities denied. The author uses recent events and upcoming legal and legislative processes to make a compelling argument for swift and aggressive action on the part of everyone to further the cause of equal treatment of everyone under the law and helps the reader understand the nature of progress for equality in a complicated legal system such as the American system of government.
