The subject of gay and lesbian sexuality is perhaps the most vexed issue in the contemporary Christian Church. Many churches have been forced to confront the matter, both theologically and pastorally and in consequence, controversies have proved divisive within the Church: most notably between conservative and liberal orientated denominations, as well as evangelical churches. This book explores these themes from a sociological perspective, addressing not only gay and lesbian sexualities, but also bi- and transgendered sexualities. It thus considers a number of supplementary issues related to the formation of identities both sexually and spirituality, the construction of theologies and worldviews, the varying significance of LGBT sexualities, as well as mobilisation, and a number of other themes. With rich empirical material being presented by a team of experts, this book constitutes the first comprehensive sociological study of 'non-hetero' sexualities in relation to contemporary Christianity. As such, it will appeal to sociologists, scholars of religion and theology as well as readers across a range of social sciences. |

Many Islamic authorities claim that homosexuality is categorically forbidden, but the reality is much less clear-cut. There are no verses in the Qur'an that unambiguously condemn homosexuals, and there are some that suggest they can be tolerated in Muslim communities. In addition, reports from Hadith that condemn homosexual and transgender persons are of dubious authenticity. This pioneering work is the first to tackle this complex and controversial issue from a religious perspective. Scott Kugle critically engages with scripture, law, and tradition to examine the foundations for prevailing attitudes towards homosexuality in Islam. In the last three decades, there has been a significant growth in the literature on lesbian identity and relationships, but the study of lesbians from a Muslim background is conspicuously absent. This article was prompted partly by the relative absence of research into the lives of Muslim lesbians in Britain, and partly by the fact that much of the literature on Islam and homosexuality has tended to focus on homosexual men, ignoring the position of lesbian sexuality in Islam. It also charts the difficulties faced by a heterosexual researcher in conducting an interview with a lesbian and calls attention to the invisibility of self-identified Muslim lesbians in Glasgow. The life story interview is used to explore the very hidden and untold story of a Muslim lesbian; as such the article draws heavily on the subject's narrative. Wie aan het Leger des Heils denkt, denkt aan een organisatie die zich inzet voor iedereen die hulp nodig heeft. Alle activiteiten van het Leger zijn daar op gericht. Het Leger komt op voor de zwakkeren in de samenleving. Dat verdient respect. Het bevreemdt dan ook dat dit kleine, maar sympathieke met-hart-en-hand-kerkgenootschap nog steeds niet altijd ondubbelzinnig achter ál zijn eigen manschappen staat. Homoseksuele heilssoldaten hebben in eigen kring al decennialang een status aparte. Aan de traditionele afkeuring van homoseksualiteit is in de officiële besluitvorming van het Leger des Heils nog vrijwel niets afgedaan. In 'Uniform uit de kast' komen tien homo's en vier lesbiennes aan het woord. Zij zouden dit kerkgenootschap de rug kunnen toekeren. Waarom doen ze dat niet? Daarover gaat dit boek. Vrijwel allemaal blijven zij strijden voor hun vanzelfsprekende recht op gelijke behandeling. (NB: Er is nog een boek met deze titel in de collectie. Dit gaat over homoseksualiteit in de krijgsmacht). |
