In this report by the Rev. Kapya Kaoma, PRA Project Director, exposes the U.S. Right's promotion of an agenda in Africa that aims to criminalize homosexuality and otherwise infringe upon the human rights of LGBT people while also mobilizing African clerics in U.S. culture war battles. Kaoma focuses for the part of the United States on "renewal" groups in The Episcopal Church, United Methodist Church USA, and Presbyterian Church USA; U.S. conservative evangelicals; and the Institute on Religion and Democracy, a neoconservative think tank that for decades has sought to undermine Protestant denominations' tradition of progressive social justice work. In Africa, Kaoma investigates ties U.S. conservatives have established with religious leaders in Nigeria, Uganda, and Kenya and the impact of homophobia exported from the United States to these Anglophone countries. While the American side of the story is known to LGBT activists and their allies witnessing struggles over LGBT clergy within Protestant denominations in the United States, what's been missing is the effect of the Right's proxy wars on Africa itself. Kaoma's report finally brings this larger, truly global picture into focus. |

It is often assumed that the process of navigating an LGBQQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, and questioning) sexual identity in a religious context is difficult and conflicting. However, only a few studies have empirically examined LGBQQ experiences of religion and identity integration. One-hundred five LGBQQ participants (age 18-24) were surveyed to examine their experiences of religious and sexual identity integration. While LGBQQ young adults do not report a high degree of sexual and religious identity integration, factors such as self-acceptance and increased knowledge were instrumental for those who reported integration. De homoseksuele leerkracht in het bijzonder onderwijs. Juist in orthodox en bevindelijk gereformeerde kring botst het gelijkheidsbeginsel vaak met de vrijheden van, bijvoorbeeld, godsdienst, vereniging en onderwijs. Dit rapport beschrijft de percepties en de sociale effecten van de implementatie van gelijkebehandelingswetgeving in deze kringen. Het schetst een beeld van een bevolkingsgroep die steeds minder ruimte ziet voor de eigen geloofsovertuiging, en zich daarmee steeds vaker geïsoleerd voelt. Het laat zien hoe het vrouwenstandpunt inmiddels niet eens als een beginselkwestie wordt gezien, maar wel als een kwestie van identiteit. Hoe streng gereformeerden homoseksuele gevoelens meer zijn gaan accepteren, maar het hebben van relaties resoluut afwijzen. Hoe de rechtszaken op dit gebied enerzijds wél tot meer discussie leiden, maar ook verstarring in de hand werken en op sommige fronten zelfs een averechts effect hebben. Als streng gereformeerden op dit onderwerp van mening veranderen dan is dit vooral op basis van gesprekken met mensen om hen heen, en de discussie in de kerk en de christelijke kranten. Bijbelse, en niet juridische, argumenten zijn daarbij doorslaggevend. |

Some religions, such as many Buddhist schools and traditional Hinduism, believe all sexual desire, whether gay or straight, must be transcended in order to achieve salvation. Neo-Pagan religions are almost unanimous in their acceptance of same-sex relationships as equal to heterosexual ones. But many orthodox leaders in Christianity, Islam, and Judaism maintain the sinfulness of gay and lesbian lifestyles, which may complicate treatment with AIDS victims. This paper explores ways to help gays and lesbians integrate their spiritual beliefs with their sexual orientation. A brief examination of religious texts is offered, but it is recommended that counselors and psychologists avoid theological debates. Instead, therapists can engage clients in psycho-theological discussions. Clients are asked to describe the nature of the Divine (e.g., is this an entity that focuses on punishment or forgiveness?), whether there is a design to the universe, and how the Divine shows love to those who seek him/her. Spirituality may strengthen the immune system, provide a mechanism for positive thoughts, and, in some cases, increase the life expectancy of clients.
