Samenvatting |
Instances of non-consensual sex (NCS) among men are highly under-reported. The research that has been conducted into this issue shows, however, that men who have sex with men experience higher rates of NCS than do other men and that these men are likely not to report that they have been subjected to NCS largely because there are no support systems in place for them. For a long time, there has been an expectation that while men might perpetrate acts of sexual violence against women, they cannot be the victims of such acts. These factors are compounded for Maori men who experience NCS. These men report that they suffer a range of long-term health effects and that they are unable to access culturally appropriate services to help overcome the effects of these negative health outcomes. At the same time, Maori men report that they have managed to find support within their cultural networks. Support services for Maori men who experience NCS need to be established and they need to incorporate appropriate cultural components into their processes and services. |

Samenvatting |
International governmental organisations (IGOs) understand discrimination of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) individuals mostly as unequal treatment in spheres such as employment, pensions, housing or insurances. Hate crimes are often not taken on board, though they can be regarded as the most cruel and violent form of discrimination and oppression of minorities. This article explores to what extent IGOs, that is the European Union, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, the Council of Europe, the Organization of American States and the United Nations have incorporated the issue of hate crime in their policies to fight discrimination against LGBT persons. These organisations vary in their response, but most approaches so far are only partial ones. This is not only a question of a lack of political will. Sound analyses, coherent concepts and methodologies and the collecting of relevant and comparable data are also part of the equation. |

Samenvatting |
In September 2001, three white men from Tisdale Saskatchewan sexually assaulted a 12-year-old Saulteaux girl from the Yellow Quill First Nations. At the time, this Reserve was known for having what was called "the worst water in Canada," while nearby Tisdale still advertises itself as the land of "sparkling waters" and the land of "rape and honey." This paper, inspired by the work of William Pinar on race and violence, uses Pierre Bourdieu's (1993; 2001) sociological constructs of masculine domination and Lacan's view of patriarchy, builds on Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick's understanding of homosociality, and extends the work of Sherene Razack on race, space, and the law. The author interrogates this Tisdale group sexual assault as the ultimate act of white heterosexual privilege, compares it to the gang killing the same year of a gay man, Aaron Webster, and sees in both events signs of internalized homoerotic panic that offer insights into how white masculinity is built on race, sex, and gender on the Canadian landscape. Samenvatting |
Research over the past decade on rape and sexual coercion among gay and bisexual men has shown that significant numbers of men report some form of unwanted or coerced sexual experience. Most studies have investigated the prevalence and impact of sexual assault, with little exploration of the nature and meanings of sexual coercion. This paper contributes to understandings of the latter, analysing the notion of 'risk' as it appeared in the talk of 23 key informants interviewed. These informants offered expert perspectives on the issue of sexual coercion and unwanted sex among gay and bisexual men, based on their professional and community experience. Thematic analysis led us to identify two predominant patterns of talk around risk: a focus on sociocultural contexts as risky for sexual coercion and a focus on certain types of individuals as vulnerable and 'at risk' of sexual coercion. Accounts of individual risk fit with currently dominant prevention models, which work to strengthen individuals' abilities to avoid or resist coercion. The accounts that emphasised context fit with recent theorising which suggests broader interventions are also necessary to prevent sexual coercion, ones that challenge normative constructions of sexuality and sexual practice. |

Samenvatting |
The purpose of this study was to investigate similarities and differences in the incidence and patterns of abuse experienced by lesbians and their heterosexual sisters. In a matched sample of 324 lesbian/heterosexual sister pairs, the lesbians reported a greater incidence than their sisters of childhood physical and sexual abuse, as well as adult sexual abuse. Both groups identified male relatives as the most common perpetrator of both childhood physical and sexual abuse. Male relatives were most commonly identified as perpetrators of adult physical abuse and male strangers were most commonly identified as adult sexual abusers. Our results demonstrate that both sexual and physical abuse are common experiences for lesbian and heterosexual women; however, since the context of these experiences is different, each group will have special needs for services and treatment. Samenvatting |
This article addresses woman to woman sexual violence, a topic that is seldom addressed in the therapy literature. A brief history of research and theory on sexual violence is presented followed by two case studies. Treatment issues are discussed and challenging questions are raised in an attempt to increase counselors' awareness of the issue of sexual violence between women with the goal of providing more comprehensive treatment to survivors of woman to woman sexual violence.
