Samenvatting |
This study offers an introduction to the Down Low lifestyle and an examination of possible attitude differences towards the related topics of male homosexuality and bisexuality. The Down Low is a lifestyle predominately practiced by young, urban African American men who have sex with other men and women, yet do not identify as gay or bisexual. Participants' (n = 146) attitudes were measured using subscales of the Components of Attitudes Towards Homosexuality scale and an original measure created specifically for measuring attitudes towards male bisexuality and the Down Low. Results suggests that age, ethnicity, and gender greatly influence attitudes towards homosexuality, bisexuality, and the Down Low, with younger, female, and Caucasian individuals having more positive attitudes towards these lifestyles. Samenvatting |
Families are of critical importance for Latino communities in the USA. Familism - or the cultural value that weighs on interdependence between nuclear and extended family members for support, emotional connectedness, familial honour, loyalty and solidarity - has been demonstrated to reduce sexual health risks among heterosexual youth, yet this relationship has not been examined among Latino bisexual teenagers. In this study, we examined how familism shapes sexual-decision making regarding behaviour and expressions of bisexuality among Latino youth. To accomplish this, we conducted 25 in-depth interviews and ethnographic observations among bisexual male and female youth (15-19 years of age) for nine months in New York City. We carried out a recurrent theme analysis together with the selection of case studies to illustrate key themes regarding familism and Latino teenage bisexuality. Findings suggest that bisexual Latino youth valued closeness to their families by maintaining family ties and seeking their emotional and material support. The negative consequence for those who wanted to keep their bisexuality private is the constant surveillance of the family network. Familism is a complex construct that has a strong potential for providing insights into sexual health practices of bisexual Latino youth. |

Following the emphasis over the last decade on coming out as a pedagogical tool, I use my personal experience in the classroom to problematize this approach. I articulate the specific experience of the bisexual teacher in the classroom, which is a different and undertheorized experience than that of heterosexual or gay and lesbian teachers. I offer "bisexual pedagogy" as a pedagogy that (1) encourages students and instructors to theorize their full, bodily presence in the academic classroom; (2) borrows Gloria Anzaldua's concept of the mestiza to complicate not just personal identity labels, but all categories of difference, thus incorporating the multicultural nature of bisexual identity into a multicultural, interdisciplinary approach to the classroom; and (3) takes as a given the importance of interdisciplinary thinking and pedagogical approach. In this sense, bisexual pedagogy is a pedagogy that is particularly sensitive to the realities of "blended identity categories" of race, sexuality, gender, religion, and so on, but one that is not exclusively the realm of out bisexuals. Samenvatting |
Employing the concept of gender as a situated performance, this research explores negotiations of gender performances by bisexuals in interpersonal relationships and how such performances may alter due to the sex/gender of their partner. Theoretical works on gender performance have primarily focused on drag performers, transgenders, and heterosexual women and men. Also, the limited existing research on bisexuality and gender has largely concentrated on the gender of bisexuals' relationship partners. Focusing on the gender performances of bisexuals themselves, this research contributes to the academic literature on bisexuality as well as the sociological study of gender. I examine how bisexuals utilize conventional scripts of femininity and masculinity in their relationships with women and men. Due to the dichotomization of homosexuality/heterosexuality, female/male, and feminine/masculine categories, bisexuals also negotiate an alteration of traditional performances of gender and sexuality in romantic relationships. Samenvatting |
Men who have sex with men (MSM) account for the largest number of persons diagnosed with AIDS in the United States, with higher-than-average rates of drug use and unprotected sex being cited as the principal reasons underlying their high rates of HIV infection. Recent evidence has suggested that the use of Websites specifically designed to promote unsafe sexual practices (e.g., Bareback.com, BarebackRT.com, Bare4ever.com) may be particularly common among MSM, thereby fostering their risky behaviors. In light of these findings, the present study, which compares HIV risk behaviors sought by self-identified gay and bisexual men, is based on a content analysis of 1,316 ads/profiles posted on one of the most popular men who have sex with other men (MSM) Websites (namely, Bareback.com) that specifically fosters unprotected sex. Ads/profiles were selected randomly based on the American ZIP code of residence. Data were collected between September 2006 and January 2007. Rates of advertised-for high-risk sexual behaviors were very high for gay and bisexual men alike, particularly for oral sex involving ejaculation into the mouth, anal sex involving ejaculation into the anus, multiple partner sex, and felching (i.e., eating ejaculatory fluid out of an anus into which at least one person previously ejaculated). Analytical comparisons of gay and bisexual men showed that, on various dimensions, the bisexual men in this sample had either similar or lower levels of sexual risk compared to the gay men. The HIV intervention-related implications of these findings are discussed. [ Copies are available at http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/haworth-journals.asp ] |

Samenvatting |
Since the 16th century A.D., the Judaeo-Christian culture has been recovering from its homophobic response to military male rapes by its enemies during its prior 3,000 years. Judaeo-Christian culture's militaries have become strong enough to resist any further enemy threats of male rape. Judaeo-Christian culture gradually gained military, political and economic world dominance and spread cultural homophobia globally. As the culture has become more secure during the last 500 years, its homophobia has slowly subsided. By the late 20th century, the culture had become secure enough to tolerate the emergence of the gay identity movement. Still, Western culture remains homophobic enough to polarize most male bisexuality into straight and gay identities and lifestyles. As cultural recovery from homophobia progresses, bisexuality may gain more acceptance. [ Copies are available at http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/haworth-journals.asp ] |

Samenvatting |
The purpose of this qualitative study is to examine the experiences of identity and agency toward social justice of nine bisexual and transgender individuals through semistructured interviews. Results from Consensual Qualitative Research analysis (Hill et al., 2005; Hill, Thompson, & Williams, 1997) revealed domains of (a) the process of coming to understand identity; (b) participants' understanding of themselves in relation to the male/female, heterosexual/homosexual binary; (c) agency; (d) human rights issues; and (e) resources. Participants typically experienced discrepancies between their inner and external realities; being invisible and invalidated by both the straight and lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) communities; feelings of isolation; and a lack of access to rights on identity, representation, and family of choice. Although they typically advocated for themselves and educated others on their identities, participants experienced the conflicting roles played by family, friends, the media, and language. From the results, agency was identified as a crucial context for identity formation and participant experiences were related to the concepts of social justice and empowerment. Samenvatting |
Beginning with a casual narrative, this work becomes a more complex theoretical journey of sexuality and politics, using personal experience, scrutiny, and analogy as vehicles of social critique. I argue that understanding sexuality as taste might fill in certain gaps that exist in current mainstream political debates over gay rights and that these gaps are created and unexpectedly resolved by the same 'bisexual problematic.' Furthermore, I note that sexuality as taste is a theory that provides a basis from which to demand equal rights without straying into dangerous realms of biological determinist absolutism.
